What is the Best Way to Recruit and Hire Temporary Employees?

When you run a factory or warehouse, it can be difficult to predict demand. While there are certain seasons or times of the year you know you will be busy and need more employees, there are other times when demand just creeps up on you. Before you know it, you’re short staffed and need to bring in temporary employees right away. Whatever the case, hiring temp employees doesn’t need to be a challenge – especially when you work with the right partner.

Determine your needs early

No employer wants their staff to burn out, but this is exactly what can happen if you are not adequately staffed. That’s why it’s important to determine your hiring needs as early as possible so that you’re always prepared for the increase in demand. There are several reasons why you may need to hire temporary employees:

  • Seasonal work, such as Christmas
  • Large order for customers
  • Current employees taking extended leaves, such as for maternity or disability
  • Unexpected illnesses for members of your team
  • Employees leaving for other jobs

Try to plan ahead as much as possible so that you can be prepared for any staffing changes you may need to make. We suggest planning your staffing quarterly. Sit down with your human resources and executive teams every three months and figure out whether you will have any increases or decreases in demand over that period of time and how many additional temporary workers you will require.

Figure out the type of temporary employee you need

Did you know there are different types of workers that can work temporarily at your business? Consider which kind might be best suited for your workplace based on why you need to hire additional staff.

  • Part-time employees: These employees work for under 30 hours per week. They are typically hired on a long-term basis. Many part-time employees have other commitments, such as school or other jobs which they do alongside working at your business, and often have fluid and flexible schedules.
  • Seasonal workers: This type of employee is hired for a peak season at your business, such as Christmas season or the summer months. They are there to fill a temporary spike in demand and have a determined end date for their role.
  • Temporary workers: Similar to seasonal workers, these people are hired to fill a specific gap in your staffing. However, they may not be there to support peak demand during a specific season. Sometimes, they can cover temporary vacancies of your permanent staff.
  • Temp-to-hire employees: This is a good opportunity for both the employer and the employee. In this scenario, the employee agrees to come on board for a specific length of time, after which the employer will decide whether to bring them on permanently. It’s a good way to test the waters for both parties.

Find a recruiting partner

You’ve got at least a hundred other things on your plate, so recruiting, screening, and interviewing candidates can be challenging – even if it is a priority. Instead of handling it all on your own, work with a recruiting agency who can help you fill any staffing gaps you have in your organization.

Noble Human Resources Solutions partners with organizations in the Mississauga, Brampton, Peel, and GTA regions to provide temporary workers, in addition to part-time and permanent employees. We can help factories and warehouses in a range of industries find staffing around the clock. Whether it’s for morning shifts, overnight shifts, or something in between, we are experienced in sourcing candidates that are well suited to your organization’s needs.

When you work with Noble, you can rest assured that filling a staffing demand will be quick, reliable, and stress-free for your organization.

Create a compelling job description

If you choose to go ahead without a recruiting partner, you will need to create a compelling job description to attract potential candidates for the roles available. If you’re working with a recruiting partner like Noble, we will handle the job description for you. We’ll ask you about the needs of your business and write up a detailed description with the necessary information for candidates.

A job description should include:

  • Job title
  • Job status, such as temporary, part-time, or full time
  • Job requirements or daily tasks
  • Basic information about the company
  • Rate of pay for certain positions

You can also include additional information such as the potential for career growth within the company or certain perks the worker may have, such as free snacks or a product discount.

Let the recruiting partner do the hard work

Now comes the hard part: finding the right candidates. If you’re handling everything on your own or with your internal team, keep in mind that this part is time consuming and you’re not always guaranteed good results. After all, if you don’t look in the right places or at the right time, you may not be able to find the right candidates.

When you work with a recruiting partner like Noble, we handle all the recruiting, screening of candidates, and interviewing of candidates for you. We have a large database of contacts filled with potential employees who are looking for work in factories and warehouse. We connect with our contacts and search for the candidates that fit the availability and skills you are looking for, thoroughly screen each candidate, and conduct a preliminary interview. We hire the workers for you, provide safety training to them, and then get them ready for their first shift at your organization.
