How to Find Part-Time Jobs for Students on Winter Break

Many students look forward to winter break because they get to enjoy a few weeks off from school. It’s a great time to visit your family and friends, sleep in till noon, and do a little holiday shopping. However, all those gifts and purchases tend to add up really fast, and then students are left wondering how they can build their bank account back up.

If you’re a high school, college, or university student, it’s important to remember that there are many part-time jobs for students on winter break. All you have to do is apply – and soon you’ll be ready to make money while you’re on hiatus from school. This way, when you go back to class, you won’t have to worry about all the holiday debt you just accumulated.

Determine your limits

Before you start looking for that seasonal part-time job, it’s important to know when and where you are able to work. For example, when do your exams finish and when does your school start in the new year? Do you want to start working before school ends or just after it? Do you want to continue the job once school starts again or just take on a seasonal role? Having answers to these questions beforehand will help you in your job search. You’ll also want to figure out where you can work. For example, will you be working in the same town as where you go to college or university or will you be working in the town where your parents live? For some people, this is the same location; however, for others this can be hundreds or thousands of kilometers apart.

Network, network, network

Whether you know it or not, your network is a valuable resource when you’re looking for a part-time job over winter break. Your family, friends, teachers, coaches, and acquaintances may know someone who knows someone that is looking to hire seasonal employees. As you know, winter break is when many people do their Christmas shopping, and as a result there is a boom for retail, manufacturing, logistics, and other related industries. Companies often double, triple, or further increase their sales during this time, so it’s essential for them to have enough staff to meet their goals. Ask around to anyone who you think may have some contacts to get an idea of who is hiring part-time students during this time. You never know which of your contacts may be able to help you find a job.

Have your resume ready

When applying for any position, whether it’s seasonal, part-time, or full-time, you will likely need a resume and cover letter. Get this ready to go before winter break starts so you can apply for jobs using it right away. Your resume doesn’t need to be extensive; it just needs to include the major details about who you are, what kind of job you’re looking for, what skills you bring to the table, and what kind of job experience you have. If the seasonal job will be your first and you don’t have any prior work experience, that’s not a problem. Everyone has to start somewhere, and many employers who hire students on a regular basis aren’t always looking for people who have work experience.

Work with a staffing agency

If you’re not sure where to actually apply for jobs, then working with a staffing agency is a great idea. For example, at Noble Human Resources Solutions, we work with many different companies in the manufacturing and warehousing industries who are all looking for new seasonal, part-time, and full-time employees. Instead of applying to one company at a time, when you work with a staffing agency like Noble, you can apply to every job we have available all at once. Just get in touch with us and let us know what kind of job you are looking for, and we’ll connect you with a company that fits your employment goals.

Put your most professional foot forward

Whether you find a job through a staffing agency like Noble or go at it on your own, you will likely have to have a short interview with the agency or employer – or both. It’s important to be prepared, do your homework, and come at it from a professional standpoint. Research the company so you have an understanding of what they do and who they are, and are able to talk about them eloquently in the interview. Have a few points in mind that you want to discuss in the interview, such as what the job entails, how you can add value to the team, and what special skills you bring to the table. Be sure to ask the questions you need answers to, such as the job’s salary, start and end dates, and any benefits. Remember to dress professionally for the interview regardless of whether it’s in person or through a video call.
