How to Find Your First Part Time Job in Mississauga, Brampton, Peel Region, and the GTA

If you’re new to the workforce, getting your first part-time job can seem a bit daunting. You may not know where to find openings or what to include on your resume, let alone what to say in your first interview. Whether you’re a student, new to Canada, changing careers – you’ll find helpful tips in this article you can use to land yourself a great part-time job that pays well and helps you reach your career goals.

Set clear expectations

The first thing you need to do when looking for a part time job is to figure out your short and long-term goals. What should this first job help you achieve? For example, is it a stepping-stone to a full-time role in the same career or a seasonal position you can use to earn enough to pay for a one-time purchase? In addition to identifying your goals, you’ll also want to set clear expectations so you don’t experience any surprises later. Keep in mind that there are plenty of employers that hire people with no or little work experience – however, there are some that prefer candidates who have a few years of workplace experience. It’s important to know that you may experience some rejection – but that you’ll also have a lot of positive reception as well. Either way, know what to expect and ensure it aligns with your goals.

Work on your resume

You may think there is no point in drafting a resume when you haven’t got any relevant work experience. However, that’s not the case. Even if you have not had a job before, you should draft a resume. It can simple and fit on just one page – but you will need one regardless. On your resume, you can include information about your special skills, education, special projects, volunteer experience, and other relevant details. For example, if you have babysat the neighbor’s kids, that is relevant information your future employer would like to see. You can also include things like special school assignments that focus on work or industry-specific details.

Reach out to your network

Don’t worry – job hunting isn’t just about who you know. However, having a wide-reaching network can certainly help. When you’re looking for a part-time job, begin by reaching out to friends and relatives who are employed at places you may want to work at. Ask them whether their companies have any openings for part-time positions. If so, learn more about the company, its culture, and the job’s responsibilities so you know what to expect when you apply. You can also reach out to people in your community, such as teachers, ministers, neighbours, coaches, and other people who may be able to help you in your search for your first part-time job.

Tap into a job agency

One of the greatest benefits of working with a job agency is that they have access to tens or even hundreds of vacant part-time jobs. Instead of applying to one job at a time, with an agency you can put your hat into the ring for multiple positions that fit your experience, availability, and interest at once, greatly increasing your chances of getting accepted for a position. Noble Human Resources Solutions has an online job board which you can check out to see the open part-time positions and apply to them with just a few clicks. You can also just submit a general application by filling out the job seeker form and getting in touch with our job search specialists.

Prepare for your interview

Whether you apply directly for a job to a company or go through a staffing agency, you will likely have to have a quick interview. This ranges from a formal interview with a number of people at the company to a casual phone call with a human resources professional. Regardless, it’s important to prepare for the interview by going over a few things. You should be able to talk clearly about your career goals, the information you have listed in your resume, and why you are the right candidate for the position. Be sure to practice saying your responses to commonly asked interview questions and project confidence in your answers. If going in person, you’ll want to dress the part and look polished and professional.

Follow up after your application and interview

Keep in mind the human resources professionals and job search specialists are often juggling multiple candidates at the same time. In order to stand out – and to ensure your application and interview is memorable – it’s best to follow up. Now, this doesn’t mean you should continuously follow up and demand an answer. It means sending a quick email or voice mail to thank the company for taking your application or meeting you for an interview and telling them you’re looking forward to hearing back from them about the next steps. Hopefully, this gets the employer or staffing agency thinking back to your application or interview.

Ready to land your first part-time job?

Getting a part time job doesn’t have to be daunting. When you approach it strategically, you can land a great part time job that helps you pay the bills and reach your career goals – whatever they may be. Just remember to set clear expectations and work on your resume. A staffing agency can help you apply for multiple positions at once and look out for your best interests.
