How to Find Seasonal Jobs for the Holidays

With the holiday season approaching, there are a lot of extra expenses coming up as well. From gifts for family and friends to tuition payments and membership renewals, it’s likely you’re feeling a little stretched in the wallet. However, while the holiday season can cause a lot of financial stress for people, it is also a good opportunity to take on a seasonal job. This way, you can earn extra income for a few weeks, and sometimes a few months, to help you meet any financial demands while having fun in a fast-paced and busy work environment. Wondering how to find seasonal jobs in your area? We’ve got the details in this article.

What is a seasonal job and why should you get one?

A seasonal job refers to work that you do during certain parts of the year, such as over the Christmas holidays or summer break. It does not occur year-round; instead, it is limited to specific seasons. A seasonal job can be for full-time hours, such as working 40 hours a week, or for part-time hours, such as 20 hours a week. When you are hired for the seasonal job, you are told the term for the position, such as for four weeks or two months, so you are aware of when the end date for the job is.

There are many industries that have seasonal work available, including manufacturing, warehousing, retail, customer service, hospitality, landscaping, and more. The industries which employ seasonal workers are those which have a drastic increase in demand during certain times of year and need additional hands on deck to fulfill customer requirements. For example, the retail season is exceptionally busy during the months leading up to Christmas because customers are purchasing gifts for their family and friends. Similarly, the landscaping industry is busy during the spring and summer because people want to make their lawns and patios look beautiful when the weather is nice enough to enjoy the outdoors.

Start before the season begins

Finding seasonal jobs can seem daunting, especially when you know you have a limited amount of time during which to work. However, the key is to start early. For example, if you know you can only work during the month of December, start looking for a seasonal job a few months before in October. Many seasonal industries hire months in advance because they want to make sure they have their staff ready to go when the busy period begins. If you wait too long to find a seasonal job, you may be out of luck as all of the positions may be filled already.

Dedicate at least a few weeks for applying for jobs and completing the application process, which may include an interview or two. Keep in mind that some seasonal jobs may also require a training period which you will have to complete before the busy season begins. This is another reason to look for seasonal jobs early on.

Narrow down your options

It’s important to understand what kind of seasonal job you’re looking for because you have to match your skills and experience to the job requirements. For example, if you’re not good with manual labour, then a job in the landscaping industry will not be the right fit. However, if you’re excellent at doing repetitive tasks and working in a fast-paced environment, then working in a warehouse or manufacturing facility may be a great seasonal work option for you.

Consider what you want to do and what you don’t want to do. Also think about the amount of time you can dedicate to seasonal work. For example, can you offer 40 hours a week of your time during the season or can you only work part-time hours? Are you available for any shift during the week or can you only work weekends? Knowing these details will also help you narrow down what kinds of seasonal jobs you can do.

Have your resume and references ready to go

Regardless of what industry you get a seasonal job in, it is more than likely that you will be required to go through a short application process. For most seasonal jobs, this includes filling out an application with your work history and experience or providing a resume, meeting with the employer for an interview, and providing professional references. Because the hiring period for seasonal jobs is so short, it’s best to have all your ducks in a row before you begin.

Work on your resume and include your work experience, volunteer experience, and relevant skills and education. If you don’t have any work experience, don’t worry – many seasonal workers don’t. However, you will still need to create a resume and include your education and skills. Ensure you focus on including skills that show how you can best contribute to the job.
