How to Find a Job in the GTA If You Don’t Speak Fluent English

Finding a job is tough in itself, but it can be even more difficult when you’re in a country where you don’t speak the language fluently. However, this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to find meaningful employment at all. There are many jobs in the Mississauga, Brampton, and GTA regions for people who are not fluent in English – you just have to know how to look for them. There are also many employers who are looking for hardworking and dedicated employees, and they are happy to hire employees no matter their English proficiency. In this article, we offer you tips and tricks for landing a part-time or full-time job, regardless of which language you speak.

Figure out which types of jobs are right for you

As one of the official languages of Canada is English, it’s important to know that not all jobs will be suitable for people who are not fluent in it. However, there are certain jobs that will work better for those who are still working on their English skills. Jobs where there is little to no customer face-to-face interaction work well for people who do not speak English as customers will expect to communicate in English.

Factory and warehouse jobs are ideal choices for people who are not fluent in English as you do not need to communicate with customers. While you do need to know enough English to converse with your manager and coworkers, you don’t need to be fluent to land a factory or warehouse job. There are many full-time and part-time factory and warehouse roles available in the GTA.

Other jobs that you may be able to do without fluency in English include cleaning jobs, maintenance jobs, cooking and catering jobs, and landscaping jobs. There may be other options as well, depending on the level of English you speak.

Continue to work on your language skills

Keep in mind that while you can get a part-time or full-time job without being fluent in English, it is expected by your employer that you will continue to improve your English skills. Being able to speak English fluently will open up more doors professionally and will help you communicate more effectively with others at work.

There are many English classes for people who are new to Canada and want to learn the official language, and many of these are available at no cost or at a low cost. Look into English classes in your area so you can work on enhancing your English skills in the months to come, which will enable you to apply and land different types of jobs.

Work with an employment agency

Applying for factory or warehouse jobs directly can seem difficult, especially when there is a language barrier involved. Plus, it’s time consuming when you have to search for open positions. A more effective way to apply for factory or warehouse jobs is to go through an employment agency like Noble Human Resources Solutions, which enables you to apply for multiple jobs at the same time.

Not only that, but at Noble you will find dedicated Human Resources Specialists who can communicate with you in many languages other than English, such as Urdu or Punjabi, ensuring you have a full understanding of the role and your responsibilities. Our team also provides basic safety training so that you have the foundational knowledge to take care of yourself around hazardous materials and heavy equipment.

Draft a resume and cover letter

Regardless of which language you speak, you will need to have a resume and a cover letter when applying for most jobs. However, the documents don’t need to be long or complicated. A simple resume that is one page long and includes your contact details and work history is all you need for most factory or warehouse positions. Some employment agencies, like Noble, don’t require a resume, but it is a nice added element to have to set you apart from other candidates.

If you need help writing a resume in English, you can use one of the many language services available to newcomers and learn the key phrases needed to include on your resume. There are also some resume services available that cater specifically to those who are not fluent in English. If you want to write the resume yourself, have a friend who speaks English review it for grammar and spelling to ensure there are no errors.

Practice your interview skills with a friend

If you’re applying for a job directly with a company, you will most likely have to do a couple of interviews. If you’re applying for a job through an employment agency, you may have to do a phone interview with the agency. In either case, it’s best to brush up on your interview skills with a friend who speaks English fluently.

It can be nerve-wracking to do any kind of job interview, but the added stress of not feeling comfortable in the language can make it worse. Spending some time practicing your answers out loud with a friend will help you feel more confident in your English skills and will help you communicate your ideas more clearly.

You don’t have to job search alone

At Noble Human Resources Solutions, we work with many candidates who speak languages other than English. From Urdu to Hindi, Punjabi to Cantonese, there is a diverse workforce we rely on in order to satisfy the needs of our clients. You don’t need to be fluent in English to get a job through Noble.
