So, you’ve landed a great part-time warehouse job, and your first day is fast approaching. Maybe you have a lot of experience in the workforce already, or maybe this is your first position. In either case, it’s normal to have a case of the jitters. At Noble Human Resources Solutions, we want each and every single one of our employees to succeed at their jobs, which is why we’ve put together this list to help make sure your ace your first day – and beyond.

Always show up on time

It may seem like a no-brainer, but showing up on time to your part-time warehouse job is key. In fact, many of the employees that don’t work out with our clients are usually dismissed because of their poor time management skills. If you want to build up a long-term relationship with your employer, be sure to make it to work on time every day for every shift. Even better if you can show up a few minutes early. This way, the employer sees you as a reliable worker who they can depend on.

Be proactive about schedule changes

Life is full of surprises, and there is no doubt that at some point we all need to change a shift. You may not be feeling well or have another engagement. Regardless of the issue, it’s important to communicate any schedule changes as soon as you become aware of them. You can call Noble Human Resources Solutions directly to let us know which shift you need to change and why. We’ll work out the details with the employer and send in a replacement.

Use your teamwork skills

In a warehouse setting, you will be working along many other employees. Some will be part of your team and completing the same role as you, while others will be on different teams. It’s important to showcase your teamwork skills and help the employees around you when it looks like they could use a hand. Often, helping others will incentivize them to assist you when you need it. Plus, it shows your supervisor that you’re keen to be a team player and work well with others to support the company. Strong teamwork skills lead to advancements and pay raises.

Get to know your coworkers

If you’re going to spend several hours a day at work, why not make work fun? After all, when work is more enjoyable, you will have higher job satisfaction and engagement – and time will fly by, too. That’s why it’s important to get to know your coworkers. Take some time to learn about their lives and their experiences on the job. You may find you have lots in common, making it easy to build camaraderie. Plus, having friends at work makes it easier to do you job because you’re having fun.

Don’t focus on the stress

Warehouse work can be stressful because many positions have quotas, such filling a specific number of orders during an hour. While it is important to hit your quotas on a consistent basis, it’s also not healthy to always be thinking about the numbers. This can lead to stress and burnout — or a loss of focus which means you may not hit your targets. Try to separate yourself from the stress while concentrating on your work. Know what your targets are in the back of your mind, but don’t always be looking at the numbers during your shift.

Take initiative

Each warehouse role has a detailed job description with duties you’re responsible for. However, in some cases, the supervisor may look for volunteers for additional tasks. Showcase your initiative by agreeing to help with the additional tasks that may be outside the realm of your responsibilities. For example, the supervisor may ask for someone to help with additional packing or may need someone to just sweep up a certain work area. Taking on small tasks like this can make a big impression on your supervisor.

Chat with your supervisor about goals

It’s important to have a good relationship with your immediate supervisor. Get to know what their goals are for the team in the near future as you may be able to contribute to them. For example, if you know the supervisor is working towards ensuring the area is always clean, helping her reach that goal will put your in a favorable position. You can also share your short or long-term goals. For example, if you let the supervisor know you’re interested in working at the warehouse during the Christmas season, she may be able to assign you some extra shifts. Communication goals a long way.

Provide suggestions for improvement

Employees on the frontline usually have a great ideas when it comes to process improvement. If you have suggestions that can improve the processes in the workplace, be sure to share them with the supervisor. Your suggestions don’t need to be complex. They can be as simple as changing the place where certain supplies are kept so they are easier to access. Another example is switching around steps within a process to make them streamlined.

Incorporate feedback quickly

If you have a part-time warehouse job, your supervisor may provide you with feedback on your workplace performance. If you want to ace the position, it’s important to incorporate that feedback quickly. For example, if the supervisor notes that your workspace is messy, make a habit of always cleaning up after yourself. This shows management that you’re a good listener and you’re taking their advice seriously. This puts more of their trust in you.
