5 Ways to Fill Your Open Summer Jobs With Ease

For many factory and warehouse businesses, summer is a busy season. Demand is up and you have to increase production in order to meet your quotas. Plus, many employees take vacation in the summer months, which means you have less staff on hand. In order to make sure you’re not left with log jams and falling behind on production, it’s best to hire seasonal summer staff. They can help you pick up the pace, meet strict deadlines, cover for permanent staff, and so much more. Learn how to hire for seasonal summer jobs in this article.

1.    Write a clear and concise job description

Every successful employee search must begin with a well-written job description. This is not only helpful for recruitment purposes, but for internal record-keeping as well. Be sure to include the following in the job description for any summer jobs:

  • The employment period (for example, from June to September)
  • The duties of the job
  • The rate of pay
  • Any benefits, perks, or bonuses
  • Important keywords (such as “temporary”, “seasonal”, or “summer job”)
  • Information about the company

This job description should be used in all recruitment efforts, from employee referrals to online job boards. Having a consistent posting ensures that all applicants start off their search with the same information about the position, leading to less confusion or miscommunication down the line.

2.    Start looking early

Searching for the right employee to fill seasonal roles can take weeks – or even months. If you want the seasonal role to start in June or July, it’s best to start looking for employees in April or May. This is especially important if you’re planning to post the job description on in-person or online job boards. It takes time for the right candidates to find your posting and apply for it.

Keep in mind that if you don’t have a lot of time and want to find summer employees right away, your best bet is to work with an employment agency. Noble Human Resources Solutions is a recruitment partner for many factories and warehouses in the Mississauga, Brampton, Peel, and GTA regions, helping them find temporary employees within days. We can even help you find the right candidate for a temporary position on the same day if needed, thanks to our database of qualified candidates who are ready and willing to work.

3.    Ask your current employees for referrals

One of the best ways to hire temporary employees is to ask your current ones. If you have a roster of permanent part-time and full-time employees, ask them for referrals to candidates who are interested in temporary or seasonal positions. They may have friends or family who are looking to boost their income in the summer months.

To increase the chances of getting employee referrals, consider creating an employee referral program where you offer a reward for any referral candidates which you hire. Some companies offer monetary rewards, such as $500 for a successful referral; while others offer prizes or extra days off. A referral program is an excellent way to search for candidates who are already vetted by your current team members.

4.    Partner with an employment agency

Hiring employees – whether they are part-time, full-time, permanent, or temporary – is a full-time job in itself. If you don’t have a full-time human resources person whose sole responsibility is hiring new employees, then you likely need some extra help now and then. When it comes to filling positions for a busy season like the summer, it’s best to partner with an employment agency who does the heavy lifting for you.

Noble Human Resources Solutions partners with a number of factory, warehouse, and manufacturing businesses in the greater Toronto area and does all of the hiring tasks for them. We not only find the candidates, interview them, and check their references, but we also provide them with safety training so they are ready to get to work at your business on day one.

5.    Plan for the next season

An excellent way to hire seasonal summer personnel is to start the year before! Take this tip into consideration for next year. At the end of this summer, ask your summer hires if they are interested in coming back next season. Many students in particular are delighted to sign up for a summer job a year in advance because they know they will have a steady income to look forward to when they off from school.

This way, the following summer you will have to considerably less hiring as the majority of your seasonal staff will already be in place from the year before. Some seasonal staff may also want to work in different seasons – for example, you summer staff may also be available for the Christmas rush. Don’t forget to use your existing seasonal staff as a useful resource for following seasons.
